The word FINAL is an abbreviation of “Future Information and Network Architecture Laboratory” and it belongs to the department of electronics and computer engineering in Korea University. Since Doo-Seop Eom (email@example.com) worked for the university as a professor, he and his graduate students have been leading the laboratory. Our research is firstly based on the communication protocols between computational devices (i.e. computers, cellular, smart-phones, even vehicles and so on). In detail, we analyse their protocols to understand how they works and to figure out their pros and cons. For the enhancement in terms of their performances and energy consumptions, we do not only modify the protocols but also propose new protocols.
Proposing new communication protocols normally causes new approaches of applications. Likewise, new concept of the communication related applications sometimes needs their own appropriate new protocols. Therefore, both are correlated with each other. As time passing by, computational electronic devices are getting smaller due to the MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology. This technology is making it realize that the size of the electronic devices to be tiny. Therefore, over the past ten years, WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) have been issuing. For this, there should be a lot of sensor devices, which can be randomly deployed in surveillance areas and each of them has functionalities of small computation, communication and senses. Due to the deployment in the nature, they should be operated with their owned batteries.
The WSN is a network technology of between sensor devices. Depending on territories, user-needs or extra environments, applications can be changes. This also needs their decent communication protocols. To provide comprehensive services for that application, we are still researching and developing the protocols for the best solution.
